Books and reading

I don’t know if I am a book worm but I like very much to read. Of course, it depends of the books. If at the beginning any book doesn’t like, I just can’t read it, except if it is from the university, in that case I have to read it for obligation.

When a I was a child I didn’t read a lot, I preferred play at the street or even watch tv. I started to read a lot when I was 13 years old with the books of Harry Potter. I can say that this is my favourite book because of the history and because with these books I realized that reading a book is like going to another world where you can feel, live and see a lot of new and extraordinary things <3.

I like every kind of books, but I prefer the books with an existentialistic deal. In that way, I can say that my favourite writer is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. His books are a little bit tiring because is so descriptive but the stories are very unique and strange.

The last book that I read was “El código da vinci” by Dan Brown. It is difficult to me summarize it but the story is about Robert Langdon who has to solve the mysterious death of Jacques Sauniere and in the long way he found out a lot of secrets about him and other people. It is the worst summary in the world but I try jaja. I can say that it is a wonderful book and very easy to read, so it is suitable for everyone. I can say that it would be a perfect gift for someone who doesn’t even like to read because the story it is told in such a perfect way that nobody can resist it. Si I invite you to read it, you are not going to regret it jaja.

"We don't know if antidepressants work, so stop bashing them"

http://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2013/aug/15/antidepressants-depression.

This article is about the question if antidepressants are actually as effective as they supposed to be. It is written by Pete Etchells (and posted on 15th august of 2013) and he presents a lot of information that can be used to answer this complicated question.

First of all, this article describes depression as a serious disorder  that makes people feel sad or/and hopeless for a long time. Then, it exposes the research of Irving Kirsch from 2008 that studied the efficacy of four different types of antidepressant. The results of this research explained that antidepressants are ONLY effective for people who have severe cases of depression instead of people with mild or slight depression. Also it exposes the research of Erick Turner from 2008 that studied the efficacy of 12 types of antidepressant (instead of four) and that concluded that antidepressants were mostly superior to placebo, independent of the severity of depression.

The author says that it’s difficult to say if antidepressants are effective or not because there are lots of studies that are pro- antidepressant that established that they are effective to solve depression and, on the other hand, there are lots of studies anti-antidepressants that established they aren’t effective to solve depression. So, he concluded that there isn’t a truthful answer to the mainly question and that we don’t know how effective antidepressants are until it appear more studies, which aren’t influence of monetary or emotional issues, that could test this. Finally, he established that the current studies only help to stigmatize depression even more.

Anime is a style of animation or cartoon from Japan. They are mostly based in mangas, little stories or comics that talk about science fiction, love, war or whatever topic you can imagine. I’m little bit familiar with Anime and I can say that I like it but I’m not a fan.

When I was younger I watch a lot of the classic Anime, like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Ranma ½, etc. I don’t remember which anime was the first one that I’ve seen and also I don’t know if I had a favorite one but I remember that the anime that I liked the most it was “Slayers”. I like Anime because is fun and because the stories are original and uncommon.

I think that Anime has influenced my life but not in a big way. It depends on the anime, because some anime are very educative, some are very existentialistic but also there are some anime that worth nothing.

I have to say that the only thing that I hate from anime is/are the songs. Specially, the opening or ending songs of the anime. When they started, I changed the channel, waited for a couple of minutes and came back to see the story.

Australia!

I’d love to visit Australia because I've heard that it is a beautiful country and that it has a lot of animals that you only see there, for example, kangoroos, koalas, etc. Also I’ve heard that Australian people are very gentile and that the Australian culture is very advanced because they have free education and abortion is legal. I’d like to talk with Australians and learn about their culture and know what their thoughts are like.

I want to have an adventure there, like going to the wild, seeing kangoroos in their environment, surfing, etc. Also I want to have fun in parties and know lots and lots of people, in that way I can practice my English.

It would be wonderful to study one or two semesters there because I’ve learned that education in Australia is better than the education in Chile, and also it would be a plus for my curriculum. However, I don’t know whether I could work or live there because I’m not sure if I could put up with being far away from my family, and also, above of all, I love Chile so I would be homesick.

My ideal job

I'm not really sure of what my ideal job would be but I’ve always hoped to work in research because I think I have plenty of ideas to work. I’m thinking of working at a University (it would be great in a foreign university) that could finance my research and of course give me the money that I need to support myself. For this job you have to be very responsible, dedicated and, more than anything, you have to be curious. I think a have these qualities and also I’m very willing to learn more and more things and I’m thirsty of wisdom. Unfortunately, this kind of job is very difficult to find, specially in this country, because research in Chile doesn’t matter and for this reason there are only a few institutions that finance investigations. As a result of this, either you have to finance yourself or work in another thing and do research on your own.
